According to Shiv Puran, during the difficult period of Shani Sade Sati, Raja Harishchandra was tested for his truth and devotion. He had to repay a huge debt of gold to Rishi Vishwamitra, but after already giving away his entire wealth, kingdom, he was worried and prayed to Bhagavan Shiva.
Through Ākāśavāṇī (divine voice), he was instructed to go to Kashi, the city resting on Shiva’s Trishula. There, Harishchandra worked at the Shmashan Ghat under a Chāṇḍāla, collecting cremation tax. In a heartbreaking moment, even when his wife Tara brought their dead son, he still followed the rule and demanded tax, which she paid by tearing half of her sari.
